About
Mario G. Olmos Elementary School
This school is named after Judge Mario G. Olmos, a well-respected Fresno community leader. Judge Olmos made an impact in the San Joaquin Valley’s Chicano-Latino community by being an exemplary role model through his achievement as a student, volunteer, lawyer and judge. Judge Olmos was killed in an automobile accident in 1990, at the age of 43.
Mr. Olmos moved to Fresno County as a young boy, where he learned English in Kingsburg, CA. “He always said that it was the education he received in public schools in California that was the reason for his success in life”, said Olmos’ widow, Mary Louise Frampton.
El Concilo de Fresno, Inc. representatives stated that “Mario is the classic example of the kind of person (a success story) for whom a school must be named; a role model from the grass roots community who succeeded despite poverty, language barrier and ethnic background. He is the classic example of Si Se Puede!”
The school is located at 550 S. Garden Avenue. The first day of school was August 20, 2007, and a dedication ceremony for Olmos Elementary was October 17, 2007.
